According to two team sources, the brother passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
He is 53 years old and the youngest of Budenholzer’s seven children. It is unknown which of his three brothers died.
The Budenholz family hails from Holbrook, Arizona, a small community three hours northeast of Phoenix, where they were born and raised.
After dropping Game 4 to the Heat on Monday, the Bucks dropped a decision in overtime in Game 5 on Wednesday to finish the series in defeat. Budenholzer kept the family tragedy a secret for the duration of the series.
Budenholzer’s brother passed suddenly, according to Lakers coach Darvin Ham, who worked with Budenholzer as an assistant in Milwaukee and Atlanta before his team’s playoff matchup against the Grizzlies on Friday.
Through a spokesman, Budenholzer stated to The Athletic that he respected and admired Ham and felt comfortable confirming what Ham had said to the media.

Budenholzer is a member of the teams at Holbrook High School and Pomona College. In addition to playing for Vejle BK in Denmark from 1993 to 1994, he also served as their junior teams’ coach that year.
Budenholzer won four NBA championships while working as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA from 1996 to 2013. Throughout the team’s first few years in San Antonio, he oversaw the video production.
