Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is a well-known Brazilian politician who has been associated with left politics. He has been in the news because he was recently elected as the new president of Brazil for the third time.
In the northeastern Brazilian city of Caetés, he was born on October 27, 1945. His mother’s name was Eudice Ferreira de Melo, and his father’s name is Aristides Inácio da Silva. Moreover, he has 7 siblings. He was raised by his aunt in Santos, So Paulo. He was brought up as a Catholic.
He didn’t have much formal schooling. After the second grade, he stopped going to school to work and support his family.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been married three times. He married Maria de Lourdes in 1969; she passed away from hepatitis in 1971. He had Lurian, his daughter, in 1974 with Miriam Cordeiro, who was then his girlfriend; they were never married.
He married Marisa Leticia Rocco Casa in 1974, a widow with whom he later had three sons. He also adopts Marisa’s first husband’s son. They were together until Marisa passed away on February 2, 2017, following a stroke. In 2022, he married Rosangela da Silva.

At the age of 12, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva worked as a street seller and shoe shiner. He obtained formal employment in a warehouse at the age of 14.
While employed at Villares Metalworks in So Bernardo do Campo during the economic recession that followed Brazil’s 1964 military coup, he joined the Metalworkers’ Union. In 1972, he left Villares to work exclusively for the union, where he oversaw its legal department until 1975 when he was elected union president.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva helped create the left-leaning Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), also known as the Workers’ Party, on February 10, 1980.
He unsuccessfully ran for president three times before winning the 2002 Brazilian general election. He was re-elected as the president in 2006. However, after being charged with serious allegations of corruption, he lost the next elections. He hasn’t come into power until recently when he was finally elected as the president of Brazil for the third term.
