Who Was Braj Basi Lal?
Braj Basi Lal was a renowned archaeologist of India. He has been in the news because he died recently.
In the United Provinces of British India’s Jhansi, he was born on May 2nd, 1921.
From Allahabad University in India, he received a master’s degree in Sanskrit.
He was a Delhi resident at the time of his. He is married and had three sons. Rajesh Lal, the eldest, is a former Air Vice Marshal of the Indian Air Force. His other two sons, Vrajesh Lal and Rakesh Lal are Los Angeles, California-based businessmen.

His Career
Following his studies, Braj Basi Lal got interested in archaeology and, in 1943, he started working as a trainee in excavations under the guidance of renowned British archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler, first in Taxila and then at locations like Harappa. After that, he spent more than fifty years working as an archaeologist.
He was appointed Director General of the Indian Archaeological Survey in 1968, a position he held until 1972. Lal then held the position of Director at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies in Shimla.
Braj Basi Lal also participated in a number of UNESCO committees. His latter writings have drawn attention and criticism for their historical revisionism and contentious stance on the Ayodhya conflict, in which he asserts that a columned Hindu temple formerly stood where the Babri Masjid mosque now stands.
In 2000, the President of India presented him with the Padma Bhushan Award. In 2021, he was given the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honor in India.
