Friends and fellow soldiers described the U.S. Army captain Rebecca M. Lobach who lost her life in Wednesday’s midair collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter as “brilliant and fearless” and “meticulous in everything she did.”
The Army said Saturday that 28-year-old Capt. Rebecca M. Lobach was one of three troops killed in the crash south of Washington, D.C., near Reagan National Airport. Including the 60 passengers and 4 crew members on the jet, a total of 67 people perished.

Rebecca M. Lobach excelled in her studies and extracurricular activities and was well-known for her determination and ambition. She participated in leadership activities and athletics while in school, which helped her hone the abilities that would make her an exceptional officer.
After graduating from the University of North Carolina as a distinguished military graduate in the top 20% of ROTC cadets nationwide, Rebecca M. Lobach of Durham, North Carolina, earned an achievement medal and an Army commendation medal. She had been an Army aviation officer since July 2019, according to her family.
At Fort Belvoir, Virginia, she was assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion, where she immediately established herself as a superb commander and pilot.
In a statement released by the Army, Lobach’s family said she had more than 500 hours of flight time and earned “certification as a pilot-in-command after extensive testing by the most senior and experienced pilots in her battalion.”
At Lobach’s family’s request, the Army did not reveal her name until Saturday, but it did publicize the names of the other two Black Hawk soldiers on Friday. The crew chief, Staff Sgt. Ryan Austin O’Hara, 28, of Lilburn, Georgia, was in charge. Pilot Andrew Loyd Eaves, 39, of Great Mills, Maryland, was Chief Warrant Officer 2.

She completed extensive training to become a Pilot-in-Command of the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and completed more than 450 flying hours during her service. She was characterized as “brilliant,” “hardworking,” and “one of the most dedicated officers in her unit” by her supervisors and fellow officers.
Age 28 Capt. Rebecca M. Lobach, of Durham, North Carolina, served as an aviation officer (15A) in the regular Army since July 2019 and was single and unmarried. She wasn’t on social media either with many online users claiming her Instagram and Twitter/X profiles were deleted before her name was revealed as a victim in the Washington DC crash which killed 67. However, this is yet to be officially confirmed.
Growing up in Rougemont in northern Durham County, Lobach was an athlete, played basketball for the Durham Flight Home School team from 2012-14 and served as the team’s captain in her senior year.
