Nearly seven months after setting a new world record for the marathon in Berlin with a time of 2:01:09, Kenyan superstar Kipchoge is back on the road. After winning in Tokyo last year and having prior victories in Chicago, Berlin, and London, he hopes to continue to solidify his reputation and legacy by competing in his fifth World Marathon Major. Only New York is left on the 38-year-old’s bucket list as he shoots for an unprecedented third marathon Olympic championship in 2024 Paris.

Gotytom Gebreslase, who took first place in the women’s marathon at the World Championships in Eugene, will also compete in Boston for the first time. The champion of the 2021 Berlin Marathon is no stranger to Boston; she has participated in a number of indoor competitions throughout the city as well as the 5 km run. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie of Eritrea, an Olympian from Rio 2016 who won the men’s gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and finished first in the 2016 New York City Marathon, will be running in Boston for the first time as well.

More than any other runner, Clarence DeMar took first place in the men’s open race seven times between 1911 and 1930. Women were only formally permitted to compete in the race starting in 1972, though they had been doing so since 1966 despite breaking the Amateur Athletic Union’s rules. Geoffrey Mutai set a new record for the fastest marathon time in 2011 by winning in 2:03:02, surpassing the previous record by 57 seconds.

Here is a look at the start times for the 127th running of the race on Monday, April 17, 2023.
