“I am happy with this decision. The court has taken its decision considering the seriousness of this issue,” Jaya Thakur said
Thakur, who hails from Banda in Madhya Pradesh, is a General Secretary in the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, bringing her formidable position and expertise to the forefront of this legal battle.
The Supreme Court pulled up the State Bank of India regarding the electoral bonds scheme, questioning the steps taken in the last 26 days. The court directed the SBI to disclose KYC details, the amount of bonds, and donations received by political parties. The SBI, represented by Advocate Harish Salve, assured the court of disclosing the required information within two to three weeks.
Apart from her involvement in the electoral bonds case, Jaya Thakur also moved the Supreme Court to restrain the central government from appointing the new Chief Election Commissioners and Election Commissioners. She cited Sections 7 and 8 of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment Conditions of Service and terms of office) Act 2023, seeking adherence to the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding the appointment process.
With two vacancies for Election Commissioners arising due to recent developments, Jaya Thakur’s plea sought direction for the appointment of members of the Election Commission in accordance with the Supreme Court’s guidelines. Advocate Varun Thakur, representing Jaya Thakur, requested an early hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
Her efforts, along with those of other petitioners and legal representatives, underscore the importance of accountability and fairness in the electoral process.
