On Monday night against Ekaterina Alexandrova, Andreescu moved for a ball in the third game of the second set before collapsing to the court in excruciating pain. Andreescu received medical attention, was taken off the pitch in a wheelchair, and then went to the hospital for testing.

“Does anyone know what happened? I woke up with a brace on my foot,” Andreescu tweeted. “But seriously, that was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I’m hoping for nothing significant. Still awaiting the official findings. Thank you to everyone for your nice words and thoughtful comments; they are appreciated.”

The 22-year-old Canadian’s resurgent run in Miami came to a devastating end amid the dramatic moments on the court on Monday night. The former World No. 4 and 2021 Miami finalist overcame No. 7 Maria Sakkari, Emma Raducanu, and Sofia Kenin to reach the WTA 1000 Round of 16 for the first time this season.

In 2023, Bianca Andreescu had begun to show signs of improvement.

Bianca Andreescu was having one of her best weeks of the 2023 season at the Miami Open up until the incident on Monday. Before to reaching the Thailand Open semifinals, she had early losses in Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open earlier in the year. Subsequently, in the opening round of both the Abu Dhabi Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships, she was defeated by Australian Open semifinalist Elena Rybakina.

Andreescu was defeated by Iga Swiatek 3-6, 6-7 in the Round of 32 in Indian Wells, and was thus eliminated (1). The 2019 US Open champion made a lot of encouraging plays against Swiatek despite losing.

Andreescu has two runs to defend for the claycourt season: a round-of-16 showing at the Madrid Open and a quarterfinal showing at the Italian Open. She seems to be preparing for those events in a tremendous race against time right now.
