Askren had signed a two-year contract with ONE Championship in December, 2013 until UFC exchanged him for Demetrious Johnson in November, 2018. In his ONE FC debut, he defeated Bakhtiyar Abbasov via submission in the first round. He would then knock out Nobutatsu Suzuki in August 2014 to become the new ONE Welterweight Champion which he would go on to defend five times.

The ONE Championship contract of Ben Askren had detailed that he would make a guaranteed $50,000 just to show up for his first bout and another $50,000 as a win bonus if he won. The was nearly double of what he used to earn at Bellator. The contract had also specified an incentive which stated that Askren’s winnings would increase for each subsequent bout, if he continued winning. It would last for two years and include six fights.
The rumors say that in reality, Ben Askren had his eyes on UFC but World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and ONE FC offered him the best terms. However, in the end the fighter admitted the money offered by ONE FC paired with the opportunity for him and his family to travel worldwide around his fight schedule, made the decision easy. Alongside this contract, he had also signed a deal to train at Evolve MMA.
