Donnarumma was instrumental in Italy’s final win over the hosts England in the penalty shootout. He saved 2 penalties and was a key figure in the Italian National team. He made his debut at a very tender age of 16 for Serie-A club AC Milan and quickly progressed through the ranks. Subsequently, he helped AC Milan to secure European football and left the team for a more difficult challenge at PSG.

Donnarumma received the most votes and defeated Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy in order to become only the second footballer to win the Yashin Trophy. Liverpool’s Alison Becker won the Yashin Trophy in 2019 after winning the Champions League.

Gianluigi Donnarumma edged out Edouard Mendy by a very big margin of 190 votes but it is fair to say that the Senegalese goalkeeper deserved it more. He was a tall figure in the Chelsea goal which could be intimidating for any forward. This points out the fact that African players are left out by the journalists and are biased towards European players.
