Novak Djokovic sent a message to the rest of the ATP Tour this week as the top seed defeated second seed Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to clinch the Tel Aviv Watergen Open trophy.

Except for 1982, when it wasn’t played, the Tel Aviv Open was a yearly event on the ATP tour. Later, in 1998 and 1999, it was staged as a Challenger competition. The tournament’s most well-known champion is Jimmy Connors, who claimed his final career victory here in 1989.

Due to security concerns in the area, the event was postponed from its 2014 resurgence. As a result of the fresh start, the competition has returned in a brand-new avatar, and this will be its inaugural year. On the ATP tour, it is designated as an ATP 250 competition.

Venue

The tournament will be held at the Expo Tel Aviv in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Schedule

September 25 marks the beginning of the qualifying rounds, that continued the next day. The first and second matches in the main draw are scheduled to start on Monday, September 26, and continue through Thursday, September 29.

From September 30 to October 2, the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will occur on those respective days.

Players, Seeds, Draw

The field’s big attraction is former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. He hasn’t been on the tour since winning his 21st Major championship at Wimbledon. Because of vaccination regulations, he was prohibited from participating in competitions in North America.

The top four seeds are completed by World No. 34 Maxime Cressy and World No. 17 Diego Schwartzman. Along with Hamad Mededovic and Yshai Oliel, wildcards were given to Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion.
