Carlos Alcaraz vs Casper Ruud

Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title and the top slot in the Pepperstone ATP Ranking by defeating Casper Ruud with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 on a historic night at the US Open.

In front of a huge international audience in a winner-takes-all final, the Spanish player outperformed the Norwegian by scoring 34/45 (76%) of the net points at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 19-year-old opened his shoulders, played enthusiastically, and handled pressure in the fourth set to earn his 51st tour-level victory of the season after three hours and 20 minutes of play.

An emotional Alcaraz collapsed to the ground following his historic triumph, to the cheers of the New York audience. Then he descended to the player’s box and hugged his group, including the team’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Alcaraz competed in six matches over the period of 20 hours and 19 minutes, winning three of them in a row in five sets to reach his first Grand Slam championship match. But as he overcame Ruud, he didn’t seem to be worn out.

The 19-year-old is the first 19-year-old to win the US Open since Pete Sampras did it in 1990. He also becomes the youngest Grand Slam winner since fellow countryman Rafael Nadal, who was also 19 when he won the Roland Garros tournament in 2005.
