The competition’s name has changed numerous times over the years. Before changing its name to Canadian Open in 1968, the competition was originally known as the Canadian Championships. The competition was subsequently known as the du Maurier Open from 1997 to 2000, and from 2001 to 2004 it was known as the Canada Masters.

From 2005 to 2019, it was known as the Rogers Cup before changing to the National Bank Open.

Rafael Nadal won the Canadian Open five times, but Ivan Lendl won it six times, making him the most successful male player ever. Last year, Daniil Medvedev won the competition after defeating Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match.
