It was all in favour of Team Canada as World No. 11 Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(3), 6-3 to earn his side ATP Cup 2022 trophy.
Roberto Bautista started his opening set by saving three break points of his own jump a bead and dominated with a 5-4 lead against Auger-Aliassime after the Canadian broke points like a supervisor and saved Five breakpoints that balanced to a 4-4 with the Spaniard in the opening set.
Auger-Aliassime then managed to take an 85-minute opening set to a 7-6(3) to power his side to just a one set away from ATP Cup 2022 trophy. The Spanish started to a 2-0 lead in the beginning but that was not enough to not give the Canadian to bounce back and grab the trophy for Team Canada.
“The way we pulled each other until the end was a great effort,” said Aliassime after the win.
Previously before the Auger-Aliassime vs Roberto Bautista clash, Denis Shapovalov managed to upset Pablo Busta 6-4, 6-3 and gave his side a 1-0 lead at the ATP Cup 2022 final and hoped that his other Canadian partner can make the job done and that’s what happened.
The doubles fixture between Team Canada and Team Spain scheduled at Ken Rosewall Arena involved Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Pedro Martinez vs Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov was not played because the result was already decided in favour of Team Canada.
Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov had already won their clash in singles to dominate with two games.
