Diego Costa Club Career Journey and Market Value
Costa began his football career in Brazil before joining Braga in Portugal in 2006, when he was 17 years old. He went on loan to Penafiel before joining Atlético Madrid the following year. He spent the next two seasons on loan at Braga, Celta Vigo, and Albacete. In 2009, his form earned him a move to Real Valladolid of La Liga, where he played one season as the club’s top goal scorer before returning to Atlético Madrid. Costa failed to stay in Atlético’s starting lineup and spent more time on loan, this time at Rayo Vallecano, where he was the club’s top scorer that season.
Costa returned to Atlético Madrid in 2011 with a bigger role. He blossomed as a goalscorer, assisting on the team’s La Liga, Copa del Rey, and UEFA Super Cup victories. He was sold to Premier League club Chelsea in a €35 million (£32 million) deal in 2014 after his performances drew the attention of several prominent clubs. Costa won three trophies during his time in London, including two Premier League crowns and a League Cup. Later, Costa returned to Atlético Madrid in a club record €56 million transfer in 2018, following a dispute with head coach Antonio Conte.
Costa signed a contract with Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro until December 2022 on August 14, 2021. On August 29, he made his debut, coming off the bench in the second half to equalise a 1–1 league draw against Red Bull Bragantino. Diego Costa cancelled his contract and became a free agent on January 16, 2022, following only 19 appearances and five goals.
Diego Costa International Career and Debut with Senior Team
Costa was called up to the Brazil national team by head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari on March 5, 2013, for friendlies against Italy in Geneva and Russia in London, both scheduled for the end of the month. On March 21, he made his first appearance, replacing Fred midway through the second half of a 2–2 tie.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation applied to FIFA in September 2013 for authorization to call up Costa for the national squad of Spain. Earlier in July, Costa was granted Spanish citizenship. FIFA laws presently allow players with multiple nationalities to play for a second country if they have only played for their first country in friendly matches, as Costa had done.
Costa was named in Spain manager Vicente del Bosque’s squad for a friendly against Italy on February 28, 2014. On March 5, he eventually made his debut, playing the entire 90 minutes at his home stadium, the Vicente Calderón Stadium, in a 1–0 victory for the hosts.
Costa was named to Spain’s 30-man provisional roster as well as the final list for the 2014 World Cup. Costa’s first goal for Spain came in a 4–0 UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying triumph over Luxembourg on October 12, 2014.
