“I’m very happy to announce that with this victory, from next season onwards, the club will be known as Mohun Bagan Super Giants. Welcome, Mohun Bagan Super Giants,” This means that the name of the Kolkata club will change again after the next season. The name ATK Mohun Bagan will then have been in use for only three seasons.

Fans were relieved when Mohun Bagan Super Giants name change was relieved

More than anything else, this could be a big chance for a lot of Mohun Bagan fans who have stopped going to games because they don’t like the team to come back. In the last three years, there have been many efforts to get ATK out of the name of the club.

Since this season, when the ISL began playing in front of fans again, there have been campaigns to get rid of ATK’s prefix. Banners that say “Remove ATK” have been seen at many of the Mariners’ home games and some of their away games as well.

For the protesters, this could be a reward for all the years they spent trying to get their club’s name back. With the Mohun Bagan name in the front, the Mariners can probably expect a big jump in attendance at all of their games next season.

The name ATKMB is likely to stay for the rest of this season, which ends after the Super Cup campaign. This means that Mohun Bagan Super Giants could make their debut in the Durand Cup starting with the next season. The Super Giants name is in alignment with the other sporting entities of the Sanjeev Goenka group and its IPL team which is called the Lucknow Super Giants.

In the area currently known as Fariapukur Lane in Kolkata, local youth set about establishing a place where they could regularly play their favourite game in the 1880s. This was done in the premises of a famous marble palace called “Mohun Bagan Villa”, owned by Kirti Mitra and a meeting was held which was presided over by Bhupendranath Basu, a well known lawyer.

He and Jyotindranath Basu would be the first presidents of the newly formed club and in sync with the name of the palace, the club was named as “Mohun Bagan Sporting Club.”
