In the Iranian city of Urmia, the Asian Volleyball Championship 2023 will run from August 19 to August 26. The top 17 teams from the continent, including the Indian men’s volleyball team, are competing in the biennial event.

For the 22nd time, the Asian Volleyball Championship is being hosted at the Urmia meet.
The six pools, five of which each have three teams and one of which has only two, were created from the 17 volleyball teams. The teams in each group will play each other once during the tournament’s group stage, using a single-leg round-robin system.
Each group’s top two teams advance to the round of 12. In the matches for the 13th–17th slot classification, the other teams will compete.
Asian Volleyball Championship 2023: Teams and pools
- Pool A: Iran, Hong Kong, Iraq
- Pool B: Japan, Uzbekistan, Thailand
- Pool C: People’s Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Indonesia
- Pool D: Chinese Taipei, Bahrain
- Pool E: Afghanistan, Qatar, India
- Pool F: Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Korea
India is in Pool E with Qatar and Afghanistan. Iran, the tournament’s defending champion and hosts, is in Pool A, while Japan, the most decorated team with nine championships, is in Pool B.
The group winners will be paired up with runners-up from other pools in the round of 12. While the other four round of 12 winners will need to play one more round to go to the semifinals, the winners of two of these matches will advance directly to the semi-finals.
India’s best performance at the Asian Volleyball Championship was fourth place at the Thailand-hosted edition in 2005. India placed ninth in the previous competition, which was held in Japan. For the 2023 Asian Volleyball Championship, India has picked a 12-member team.
