India named a 12-person team for the continental kabaddi championship, which will take place from June 27 to June 30. Pardeep Narwal, the all-time top raider in the well-liked Pro Kabaddi League, is not listed. Deepak Niwas Hooda, an all-around player and former captain of the Indian kabaddi team, was also passed over.
The Indian Kabaddi team’s tryouts for the Asian Kabaddi Championship were held last week at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, Bihar. Surender Gill, Surender Nada, Girish Maruti Ernak, Siddharth Desai, Maninder Singh, Ravinder Pahal, and Mahender Singh were notable individuals who did not make the Indian team.
Arjun Deshwal, the top raider from PKL season 9, will bolster the attack with seasoned raiders Naveen Kumar and Pawan Sehrawat. Sehrawat will return after suffering a season-ending injury that prevented him from participating in the PKL. The defence will be aided by veteran players Nitesh Kumar and Surjeet Singh.
The kabaddi team also included notable defenders Sunil Kumar, Parvesh Bhainswal, and Vishal Bhardwaj in addition to all-arounder Nitin Rawal.
Bhaskaran Edachery, a former head coach of India’s national team, will be in charge of the team. Ashan and Sanjeev Kumar are the other of coaches who have been named.
The Indian kabaddi team is the most successful team in the history of the competition with seven gold medals from the eight tournaments to date. India is the current champion after defeating Pakistan in the 2017 championship match at Gorgan, Iran.
The Asian Kabaddi Championship 2023 is scheduled to be held in Busan, South Korea from June 27 to 30 and the continental kabaddi event will be played after a hiatus of six years. The last edition was held in Gorgan, Iran in 2017.
Since the inaugural tournament in 1980, the championship has brought together teams from various Asian countries, including India, Pakistan, Iran and Bangladesh among others and the Indian men’s kabaddi team is the most successful side in the history of the Asian Kabaddi Championship, winning seven gold medals from the eight editions. Iran won the title in the 2003 edition in Kangar, Malaysia.
India are the defending champions having beaten Pakistan 36-22 in the final in 2017 and in the women’s category, too, India are the defending champions. They defeated South Korea 42-20 in the final in 2017.
