2023 Asian Games chess final day results, best performers, score, & medal winners
Vidit Gujrathi’s hopes for a medal were dashed in the Asian Games as he suffered a defeat in the last round, and the Indian chess players couldn’t secure podium finishes in the individual events on Wednesday. Gujrathi, with 5.5 points, and Arjun Erigaisi, also with 5.5 points, claimed the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
Gujrathi, at 28 years old, had a promising start but saw his medal prospects slip away as he fell to Uzbekistan’s GM Javokhir Sindarov in the final round. Erigiasi, a 20-year-old with a performance marked by inconsistency, managed to finish with 5.5 points after defeating Bangladesh’s Enamul Hossain. Gujrathi faced a turbulent middle phase but rebounded with victories over Iran’s Parham Maghsoudloo in the fifth round and Uzbekistan’s former world Rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the sixth round, yet he couldn’t secure a strong finish.
Notably, Indian superstars Harika and Humpy faced each other in the eighth round of women’s individual event, resulting in a draw. Later in the final round, Harika managed to surprise the ultimate winner, Jiner Zhu from China, with a win. However, this victory wasn’t sufficient to secure a medal for her. In the women’s individual event, former bronze medalist D Harika, secured the fourth spot with 6 points, while Koneru Humpy, the 2006 champion, ended up in seventh place.
