In the women’s singles quarter-finals, PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, was defeated by He Bingjiao with a score-line of 21-16, 21-12, putting an end to India’s hopes of a medal in women’s badminton at the 2023 Asian Games. Asmita Chaliha, the other Indian representative in Hangzhou, was eliminated in the round of 32.


On the other hand, HS Prannoy displayed remarkable resilience despite a back injury, overcoming Malaysia’s former All England champion, Lee Zii Jia, with a score of 21-16, 21-23, 22-20 in the men’s singles quarter-finals. Prannoy comfortably secured the first game but faced a tense battle in the second, ultimately winning the decider. He saved two match points before securing a spot in the top four. Prannoy is set to face local favorite Li Shifeng in the semi-finals, who is currently ranked world No. 8 in men’s singles.


In the men’s doubles, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also guaranteed themselves a medal. They cruised past Singapore’s Nge Joo Jie and Johann Prajogo in the quarter-finals with a commanding score of 21-7, 21-9. This achievement marks India’s second-ever medal in men’s doubles at the Asian Games, following Leroy Francis D’Sa and Pradeep Gandhe’s bronze medal finish in New Delhi in 1982. In Friday’s semi-final tie, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will face-off against 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik with.
