Annu Rani is a professional Indian javelin thrower and she was the 1st Indian who reached the finals of the women’s javelin throw event in the World Athletics Championships, Doha, in 2019. Annu Rani had qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through world rankings after missing out on the Olympic Qualification mark.

Annu’s professional career best effort is 63.24m which helped her to win the gold in the National Interstate Athletic Championship, Patiala, in year 2021.
Tokyo Olympian Annu Rani won gold in the fourth AFI Indian Open Javelin Throw Competition breaking her own national record in the process as registered a new best of 63.82 metres, which represented a 58-centimeter increase over her previous national record of 63.24 metres.
Annu Rani has an elder brother named Upendra and the names of her parents are not known. She has completed her schooling and graduated from her hometown Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Annu Rani’s talent was identified by her brother, Upendra, who noticed her upper body strength during a match of cricket. Her brother started to train her by asking her to hurl sugarcane sticks in an empty field. Annu Rani’s first javelin stick was one that she crafted herself from a long piece of bamboo because she couldn’t afford one.
Rani began playing javelin throw first in year 2010 at the age of 18 years. Her brother later started to pay for her training as well, apart from this her father’s disapproval of girls pursuing sports was a hurdle for her. Her father came around to supporting Annu’s talent after she proved herself by breaking the national record in year 2014, and now he supports her ambition too.
Annu Rani was initially coached by Mr. Kashinath Naik and is now coached by Mr. Baljeet Singh. She began professionally in year 2014 at the National Inter-State Athletics Championship in Lucknow. Rani achieved the gold medal with a throw of 58.83 meters, breaking a 14-year-old national record and qualifying her for the year 2014 Commonwealth Games where she completed eighth.
Later on, in same year, Rani won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, with a throw of 59.53 meters. Two years later she broke her own record again at National Inter-state Athletics Championship with a throw of 60.01 meters.
