Mario Andretti gives the first indication of their Formula One driver lineup: “There will definitely be an American driver on the team.”

While F1’s governing body is happy that Andretti Global’s bid meets all the relevant criteria, the important Phase 3 sees the team thrashing out financial terms with the Commercial Rights Holder (CRH), which is F1 itself and if F1 does eventually agree terms with Andretti, it would much rather a 2026 entry, when the new Concorde Agreement would be in play, as opposed to the one that covers the 2021-2025 seasons, with just the $200 million anti-dilution fee in that period.

Be that as it may, now it has the letter (or should that be press release?) from the FIA confirming it is happy, preparations can now be ramped up by the team, and that includes figuring out which two squishy bits of organic material will strap themselves into the first ever Andretti-Cadillac Formula 1 car.

General Motors and Andretti Autosport formed the new team Cadillac, which will probably be known as Andretti Cadillac, to enter the Formula One grid. It is difficult to predict when this team will join the grid as the 11th team, who will be driving for them, or how likely it is that it will happen.

However, as Mario Andretti confirmed to RacingNews365, there is little doubt that somebody American will be driving for the American team. There will be one American driver on the team, and the other will be an experienced one, I can guarantee that.

Who can be that American driver?

Logan Sargeant, competing for Williams and a rookie this season, is the sole American driver currently on the grid. Cadillac would still lack experience compared to a few other drivers on the circuit even if he joins the F1 grid by 2025. So, it’s possible that Sargeant will make the cut. If not him, and if Mario Andretti is referring to a true rookie, it might be Jak Crawford, who is 18 and is competing in Formula 2 in his first year of junior racing.

He is now ranked 13th, but if his performance increases, he might start to race. However, Sargeant has a better chance of succeeding since by the time they join, he will have gained enough expertise to bring the Cadillac into points.

A good first season or two will be to become a regular points scorer and Q3 fixture, battling away in the midfield for every point and on the current grid, the standout candidate is Valtteri Bottas.

If Herta fails to get his super licence, the next best thing Michael Andretti can do to get an American in the seat is get Josef Newgarden has been linked to F1 before, back in 2017 after wrapping up his first IndyCar title.

Colton Herta might be the choice Andretti wants if he can get his 40 super license points as in autumn 2022, Red Bull Motorsport Advisor Helmut Marko tried everything to get Herta a seat in F1 with AlphaTauri – but his lack of super licence points proved a stumbling block.

Mario Andretti intends to compete in Formula One in 2025

The FIA’s desire for extra teams on the grid boosted the team’s interest in joining Formula 1, although the current teams weren’t entirely in favour of having more than 10 teams. This is because it is obvious that if another team enters, the reward money will decrease.

The $200 million anti-dilution fee that teams must pay to join the grid is intended to combat this. It has been stated, nevertheless, that it will be boosted to $600 million in light of the clubs’ choice. This one’s decision is still pending. Mario Andretti stated that they hoped to join the grid beginning with the 2024 campaign. He also believes that now that it doesn’t appear to be happening before 2025, it would be better to join.
