Aleksandar Mitrovic was born on September 16, 1994, in Smederevo, Serbia, Slovakia, formerly Yugoslavia, to his mother Natasha Mitrovic and father Ivica Mitrovic. Mitrovic grew raised in Smederevo, eastern Serbia, with his brother Milan, who is now his agent.

Mitrovic was a young product at Partizan, and after a loan at Teleoptik, he went professional and was a regular as they won the Serbian SuperLiga in his debut season. He was rated among the top 10 talents under the age of 19 in Europe by a group of UEFA reporters when he was 18 years old. In a two-season tenure with Anderlecht, he scored 44 goals in 90 games across all competitions for a club record €5 million.

Mitrovic was named the best player of the tournament after helping Serbia win the 2013 European Under-19 Championship.
