24 teams are competing for the title of Africa’s champions in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which is being held in the Ivory Coast. The hosts could not even make it to the knockout stages.
After falling to Equatorial Guinea 4-0 in their final Group A match on Monday in Abidjan, Ivory Coast was on the verge of an embarrassing elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations. Now, as one of the four best third-placed teams, the two-time champions must wait anxiously to find out if they will make it to the round of 16.
The top four teams in each group will also advance, along with the top two teams overall. This next weekend, the last-16 will kick off the knockout stage. Ghana lost a two-goal lead to tie with Mozambique in stoppage time, and they will most likely be eliminated from the competition.
Algeria loses to Mauritania 1-0, sending them out of the group stages. Having finished second in the competition in 1996, Tunisia’s season has started without a victory. Every team in group E has a chance to advance to the knockout stage. After a thrilling Group B match in Abidjan, where Egypt and Cape Verde drew 2-2, Egypt advanced to the round of 16.
