The AFC Champions League (abbreviated as ACL) is an annual continental club football competition contested by Asia’s top-division football clubs, know the 2022 fixtures and teams
It is Asia’s most prominent club competition, featuring national league champions (and, in certain cases, one or more runners-up) from their respective national organisations.
History
The Asian Champion Club Tournament was first held in 1967, however the competition was renamed in 2002 after the Asian Club Championship, Asian Cup Winners’ Cup, and Asian Super Cup were merged.
Al-Hilal is the most successful club in the league, having won four titles. They are also the current champions, having won their fourth championship in 2021.
Format Of The Tournament
In the round-robin group stage of the competition, a total of 40 clubs compete. Clubs from Asia’s strongest national leagues earn automatic invitations, while clubs from lower-ranked nations must qualify through qualifying playoffs and must also compete in the AFC Cup. The AFC Champions League champion advances to the FIFA Club World Cup.
In this event, the away goal rule is quite essential. In the event of a tie, the team that scored more goals in the away match of the Head-to-Head match receives the higher priority over the other.
