On January 12, 2024, in Qatar, the largest continental football competition in Asia is scheduled to begin. There will be a total of 24 countries competing this time for the coveted championship.
The 18th edition of the competition was postponed because of circumstances relating to the COVID-19 epidemic, although it was initially scheduled to take place in China.
51 matches total from nine stadiums in Qatar will be held during the AFC Asian Cup. The competition’s opening match and championship game will be held at Lusail Stadium.
Six round-robin groups, each with four, comprise the national teams. The best two national teams ranked third and the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, there are enough elite players among the teams vying to be named the best squad on the Asian continent. Bookmakers had the Japanese national team, with a strong lineup, as the tournament’s clear favourite. There are some well-known football players in the national squad, and many of them play for elite European clubs.
There will be several notable players competing in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup due to the growing popularity of Asian football and the prominence of Asian footballers worldwide. Also with a strong probability of winning are the Australian and Qatari teams. The event will be hosted by Qatar and the defending champions hope to win the title again.
Not to be overlooked is the South Korean national squad, which is captained by Son Heung-Min of Tottenham Hotspur. Three countries with fairly formidable lineups competing are Saudi Arabia, Japan, and South Korea.
Here is the list of teams who are heavy favourites at the AFC Asian Cup as per the bookmakers:
- Japan – 3.44
- Australia and Qatar – 6
- South Korea and Iran – 6.5
- Saudi Arabia – 7
