In the viral footage, he was heard stating, “Jo Ram Ko Nhi Bhajta Vo Chamaar Hai,” implying that those who do not worship Lord Ram are identified as Chamaar. It’s important to understand that “Chamaar” refers to a Dalit community that is classified as a Scheduled Caste and has traditionally been connected to low-paying jobs.

Who is Rambhadracharya?

Rambhadracharya is a well-known Hindu spiritual guru, poet, author, composer, singer, playwright, and Katha artist. He has been in the news because the video of him using a casteist slur went viral on social media.

While his real name is Giridhar Mishra, he is prominently known as Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Swami Rambhadracharya. He was born on 14 January 1950 in Shandikhurd, Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father’s name is Rajdev Mishra and his mother’s name is Shachidevi Mishra.

When Rambhadracharya was two months old, he went blind. His eyes were afflicted with trachoma on March 24, 1950. Since his father was employed in Bombay, he received his early schooling from his paternal grandpa. Though he did not attend formal education until he was seventeen, he had grown up listening to and reading a lot of literature.

He enrolled in the Adarsh Gaurishankar Sanskrit College in Jaunpur’s neighboring Sujanganj. To pursue advanced studies in Vyakarana, he later enrolled in the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi in 1971. After placing first in the final test for the Shastri (Bachelor of Arts) degree in 1974, he enrolled in the same university for the Acharya (Master of Arts) degree.

Subsequently, Rambhadracharya enrolled at the same university to pursue a doctorate in Vidyavaridhi (PhD) under Pandit Ramprasad Tripathi. Even after being awarded a research fellowship by the University Grants Commission (UGC), he struggled with money for the following five years. On October 14, 1981, he earned his Vidyavaridhi degree in Sanskrit grammar.

In 1997, he was awarded the post-doctorate Vachaspati (DLitt) degree by Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.

He followed celibacy and is currently 73 years old and unmarried.

His career

Rambhadracharya is an eminent Indian Hindu spiritual leader, scholar, and polymath. Since 1988, he has been one of the current Jagadguru Ramanandacharyas. In addition to founding Tulsi Peeth, he is the lifetime chancellor of Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University, which admits only students with disabilities.

Blind from birth, he accomplished amazing scholastic achievements without receiving a formal education until the age of seventeen. He was a proficient speaker of 22 languages and a talented poet and writer in many more languages, including Sanskrit, Hindi, Awadhi, and Maithili.

His work spans more than 100 volumes and 50 articles, including critical editions, renowned scriptural interpretations, and epic poetry. Respected as a Tulsidas expert, Rambhadracharya is in charge of national TV’s Katha programs for the Ramayana and Bhagavata.
