The 16th of June, 2023 saw the cinematic premiere of the mythological drama film starring Telugu Superstar Prabhas. Its reported 600 crores in production costs make it the most expensive film of the year. After the trailer’s release, anticipation for the film skyrocketed, and on its first day in theaters, it earned a staggering 95 crores. The following two days saw the film bring in another 65 and 64 crores.

The Plot

The film’s premise revolves around Ram and his brother Lakshman’s and Hanuman’s quest to rescue Sita from the clutches of evil Ravana, who had kidnapped her after Ram had spared her life. The Indian mythology we’ve been learning about is the basis for this tale. The film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh, Vatsal Sheth, and others.

Adipurush Movie Review

There has been a lot of backlash and, sadly successful calls for censorship, over Sanon’s casting as Sita. (Some vocal opponents are upset that Sanon, who plays Sita in “India’s Daughter,” has engaged in suggestive dancing in previous films.)

Is it even feasible to watch, much less appreciate, such a stock tale without drawing too many parallels to other films or real-world politics? What about the fact that “Adipurush,” whose Sanskrit title translates to “First Man,” has a hefty budget (Rs 500 crore, or roughly $67 million), supposedly exceeding all previous Indian mega-productions, because of the connotations that come with that term? There is a lot of terrible green-screen image-compositing in “Adipurush,” and it all looks cheap and uninspired, thus the movie’s shoddy computer visuals may end up being the most important factor.
