According to Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A, there will have been a 60% rise in the prize money and purse available at The Open Championship since 2016. The Open Championship champion in 2022 will take home a check for £2.1 million or nearly $2.5 million, from this total. This represents an increase of about 500,000 over Morikawa’s 2021 prize.
The second-place finisher is also eligible for a payout of £1.2 million ($1.45 million). Meanwhile, the top four will each receive over 500,000 British pounds, and the top nine will each receive over £250,000. The prize money drops to £26,750, or $32,000 for the golfer who finished in 70th position.
The Open Championship’s purse and prize money are in third place among the four majors, behind the PGA Championship and the Masters. The Players Championship and LIV Golf, supported by Saudi Arabia, are two additional events that provide more.
