Who was Richard Russell and How his actions endangered People of an Entire Island
At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport situated in Washington on August 10, 2018, baggage handler Richard Russell, age 29, stole an Alaska Airlines aircraft. Russell, a Horizon Air ground support representative who had no prior flying experience, took advantage of the company’s Bombardier Q400. A quarter-of-a-mile from the airport, on Ketron Island in Puget Sound, he was able to launch the plane and fly it for an hour and a half before crashing it.
Richard Russell remarked that he had a lot of close people who cared about him and regretted his actions which could disappoint those people. According to the same KOIN article, these were the last words uttered by Richard Russell.
Last Words of Richard Russell and FBI’s Stand on the Case
More information about the terrible event and Russell’s final seconds before the collision has been revealed by new CCTV footage made public by the Port of Seattle. Five hours before he stole the plane, Russell was captured on security tape passing through airport security wearing a shirt that read The Sky’s No Limit. He was then seen entering a secured baggage handlers-only area of the airport.
In the video, he was captured while preparing the aircraft for takeoff, climbing into the cockpit, and starting the engine in the security footage. The plane lifted off at 7:33 p.m. local time. Russell attempted to safely land the aircraft at the adjacent Joint Base Lewis-McChord with the aid of air traffic authorities. Unfortunately, at 8:46 p.m. local time, he lost control of the aircraft and crashed it into Washington’s Ketron Island, a tiny island with only 20 inhabitants.
The federal government opted not to press charges after the FBI looked into the issue. FBI will not pursue federal charges due to Russell’s demise and the absence of any other conspirators, according to a statement. The Medical Examiner’s Office highlighted in the same statement that there is enough evidence to determine that the death was intentional. Later, the agency also stated that Richard Russell had the option to land the plane.
