FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League History, Number of Teams, And Format
The FIVB reportedly announced in June 2017 that it would significantly alter the World Grand Prix and World League formats for 2018. The World League and the World Grand Prix will reportedly have just one Group of 16 national teams starting in 2018. The men’s and women’s volleyball nations leagues were officially launched by the FIVB in October 2017 through press release, replacing the World League and World Grand Prix.
Similar to the previous World Grand Prix, the competition was split into two phases: a preliminary round with a rotating host city system and a final round played in a preselected host city. In contrast to the World Grand Prix, the preparatory round lasts for five weeks. The competing teams are divided into pools, and each pool plays host to one match per week between all of the teams in that pool. The pool games all take place over the course of one weekend in the same city.
The tournament’s play-by-play structure was altered for 2022. In the pool phase of the new format, 16 women’s teams will compete in groups of 8 teams. During the pool stage, each team participates in 12 games. The competition’s final knockout round will then feature eight teams.
