While Jonghyun has a particular place in the hearts of fans and SHINee, he has tragically been reduced to death by non-fans and the mainstream media. Only last year, a singer was chastised for utilising a funeral photo of a late K-pop idol as a prop in his song video. Fans are now outraged that a New Yorker story exploited Jonghyun’s suicide as clickbait to discuss BTS’ achievements.

He was born on April 8 1990 and died aged 27 on 18 December, 2017 and would have been 31 in 2022.

“In 2017–the same year that Kim Jonghyun, a vocalist in the K-pop group SHINee, died by suicide–BTS launched a campaign with UNICEF to condemn violence against children and teenagers,” the writer writes in the New Yorker story.

With BTS’ campaign launching in November 2017 and Jonghyun’s tragic death in December 2017, the association of the two unconnected events have Shawols (SHINee’s following) upset and ARMY (BTS’ fandom) uneasy. Well, Jonghyun is suddenly trending as admirers discuss his accomplishments.

Jonghyun Was Mental Health And Lgbt Ally

Along with being a prominent soloist and member of one of the top K-pop groups, SHINee, Jonghyun was also recognised for his generosity and philanthropy, which ranged from discussing women’s rights to political concerns. When he took part in a rally for the human rights of the sexual minority in South Korea in 2013, the idol showed to be an LGBT+ ally. Jonghyun altered his Twitter profile image to a statement raising awareness about LGBT+ issues. His intervention was critical as the incident spread on Korean social media. A transwoman wrote the post and also shared her chat with Jonghyun.

Despite his difficulties with depression and popularity, Jonghyun was a champion for mental health. His death sparked a debate about celebrity suicides and the harsh nature of the K-pop industry, which does not allow for mental health care. This has recently changed for the better, with idols now being permitted to take a break due to mental health difficulties.

During his radio programme ‘Blue Night,’ Jonghyun frequently discussed his battle with depression and offered guidance to listeners. Many fans who suffered from mental health and nearly gave up have said that the ‘Blue Night’ episodes offered them hope.

Jonghyun’s Finest Works

Jonghyun was first and foremost an artist, but he also left behind several albums. Despite the label’s reputation for not allowing its artists artistic freedom, he was the first SM artist to write and compose an album. During his reign, the Korean media complimented his solo songs for being distinctive and conveying his colour.

With his most recent album, ‘Poet | Artist,’ he also became the first male SM soloist and the fourth K-pop soloist in general to debut on the Billboard 200. While his songs were vibrant and characteristic of K-pop, Jonghyun would also include real-world themes and his anguish into his music, as seen in melancholic compositions like ‘Lonely,’ ‘End of Day,’ ‘And breathe,’ and ‘Let me out.’

A Little About Jonghyun and his death reason

Kim Jonghyun (April 8, 1990 – December 18, 2017) was a South Korean singer-songwriter, record producer, radio broadcaster, and novelist signed to the SM Entertainment label. For nine years, he was the primary vocalist of the South Korean boy band Shinee, recording twelve albums in both Korean and Japanese. He was also a member of SM Entertainment’s project group, SM the Ballad, which released two EP albums.

Jonghyun was also a solo artist, releasing his debut EP album, Base, in January 2015. It reached number one on the Billboard World Albums Chart as well as the Gaon Album Chart. On September 17, the same year, Jonghyun released Story Op.1, a compilation album. She Is, his debut studio album, was published on May 24, 2016, followed by Story Op.2, his second compilation album, on April 24, 2017. On October 2, 2015, Jonghyun launched his first solo concert tour, The Story by Jonghyun. This was followed by three further musical tours in subsequent years. He was recognised as one of South Korea’s top vocalists.

His Principles

He was also praised for his artistic freedom and engagement in the composition of his songs, both of which are uncommon in K-pop. Jonghyun remained musically active as the primary vocalist of Shinee and as a solo artist until his death from carbon monoxide poisoning on December 18, 2017.

Poet | Artist, his final album, was released posthumously on January 23, 2018. Before the album’s release, it was reported that all album revenues will be donated to Jonghyun’s mother and utilised to establish a charitable foundation. Jonghyun’s family created the Shiny Foundation in September 2018 to assist struggling young artists.
