During an X-ray screening, Brazilian authorities discovered an unauthorised LW Seecamp.32 pistol in Ecclestone’s luggage, according to police, who added that the 91-year-old was detained and transferred to a facility at Viracopos airport in Campinas.
Ecclestone admitted to having the pistol but said he was unaware it was in his luggage at the time, according to police. The British citizen posted bail and was allowed to fly to Switzerland.
When asked about Ecclestone’s detention, the Sao Paulo state public security office acknowledged to Reuters in a statement that a businessman was detained for handgun possession at Campinas’ airport, but did not name him.
The “tiny, silver-coloured handgun” was devoid of ammo, according to the office, and the arrestee was required to post bail of 6,060 reais ($1,257.55). It was also said that the weapon had been seized.
Ecclestone was unavailable for comment immediately.
He is married to Fabiana Ecclestone, a Brazilian-born FIA vice president and member of the World Motor Sport Council.
In May, they travelled to South America for numerous events, including a small Stock Car race in the countryside outside Sao Paulo and a meeting with triple world champion Nelson Piquet in Brasilia.
The Ecclestones own a coffee farm in Sao Paulo, which they purchased in 2012 and visit frequently while not in Europe. In the 1970s and 1980s, Piquet drove for Ecclestone’s Brabham team.
For decades, Ecclestone was Mr Formula One, the guy who made the deals, spun the gears, and built the sport into a multibillion-dollar enterprise.
He was replaced in 2017 after Liberty Media, located in the United States, took over the commercial rights.
