Their significance has increased by 2022.
Teams are no longer able to throw money at a problem and bring enhancements to every race, abandoning those that don’t quite work out, thanks to the new financial budget cap. Instead, with a budget constraint, it is now critical to introduce an update – and ensure that it works; otherwise, it is a waste of money that you will not be recouping.
Aston Martin presented the first major improvement package to the AMR22 at the Spanish Grand Prix, which had flattered to deceive in the first few races of the season. The new design, however, has been nicknamed a ‘Green Red Bull.’ Why was the new Aston Martin given that name?
Despite its fragility, the RB18 has shown to be quite quick throughout the first five races. Max Verstappen has won every race he has finished, with Sergio Perez also claiming pole and several podium finishes.
When the new Aston Martin first appeared in the Barcelona pit lane, it resembled the Red Bull. The sidepod design and what they are striving to achieve with the air are the two vehicles’ most striking similarities.
The Aston Martin formerly featured a significant undercut beneath the sidepod that was fairly flat and horizontal.
The team has repackaged the internals, such as radiators, for the Spanish GP, with the sidepods now in a sleeker form — seeking to produce downwash down to the diffuser to create rear grip.
The AMR22 now has a new floor with slots, identical to those used by Red Bull since the season began. Because of the similarities between the two designs, some have called the Aston Martin a “Green Red Bull.”
IS THE NEW DESIGN PERMITTED?
The FIA, in collaboration with Red Bull and Aston Martin, studied the changes and are pleased that Aston created them on its own. Teams are permitted to take inspiration from other ideas on the grid, however reverse engineering is strictly prohibited.
It was discovered that the enhancements for Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel had been in the works for months – even before the Red Bull was revealed. The ‘Green Red Bull’ is a throwback to the 2020 season, when Aston Martin’s previous iteration pulled a similar stunt.
Racing Point chose to create their own replica of the 2019 Mercedes W10 championship winner that year. The RP20 took off quickly, earning numerous podiums and a win in the Sakhir Grand Prix thanks to Perez.Because it was essentially a Mercedes and pink, it was called “the Pink Mercedes.”
Red Bull team manager Christian Horner, ever the showman, stood on the pitwall for FP1 in Spain carrying a green can of Red Bull — despite the fact that Red Bull believes the design merits additional research.
