History of Thailand Open Badminton and BWF Event Status

The Thailand Open is an open international badminton tournament that has been held in Thailand since 1984. In 1986, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2021, it was discontinued. Since 2018, Thailand Open has been classified as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 events in the BWF events hierarchy.

Indian Shuttler’s Success Story in Thailand Open Badminton

Prakash Padukone, an Indian badminton legend, reached the final in the first edition in 1984, but had to settle for second place after losing to eventual champion Sugiarto. At the time, the Indonesian was the global champion.

India, on the other hand, had to wait another 28 years to earn their first title at the Thailand Open. Just over a month before her historic bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Saina Nehwal won the Thailand Open 2012 women’s singles event, defeating local favourite Ratchanok Intanon in the final.

Kidambi Srikanth won the men’s singles event the next year, defeating Thai player Boonsak Ponsana in the final. Four years later, B Sai Praneeth repeated Srikanth’s feat by winning the 2017 men’s singles event.

Satwiksairaj Ranjireddy and Chirag Shetty continued their doubles success in 2019, putting together an unbelievable run. In a marathon final that lasted nearly two hours and thirty minutes, the duo defeated reigning men’s doubles world champions Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen of China.
