Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, a music composer and world-famous santoor musician, died in Mumbai at the age of 84.
Sharma was half of the well-known Shiv-Hari music duet. In the 1980s and 1990s, he and famed flute musician Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia composed music for a number of Bollywood films. The team composed music for films such as ‘Silsila,’ ‘Lamhe,’ ‘Chandni,’ and many more.

Who was Pandit Shivkumar Sharma?
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was a santoor musician and composer from Jammu, India. He was born on January 13, 1938, in Jammu, to vocalist Uma Dutt Sharma. Dogri is his mother tongue. When he was five years old, his father began teaching him singing and tabla.
Shivkumar began studying the santoor at the age of thirteen, and in 1955, he performed his first public performance in Mumbai.
He has two sons with his wife Manorama. Rahul, his son, began practising the santoor at the age of 13 and has been performing with him since 1996. Shivkumar revealed in a 1999 interview that he picked Rahul as his shishya because he believed he possessed the “gift of God.”
He has received several national and international honours, including honorary citizenship in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1985, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
He got Platinum Discs for “Call of the Valley,” “Chandni,” and the soundtrack for the film “Silsila” over his long career. For the soundtrack of the film “Faasle,” he received a Gold Disc. In 2015, he was also awarded the Pandit Chatur Lal Excellence Award.
His Career
Shivkumar Sharma is credited for popularising the santoor in classical music. In Shantaram’s 1956 film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, he wrote the background music for one of the sequences. In 1960, he released his debut solo album.
In 1967, he collaborated on Call of the Valley (1967), a concept album with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra which became one of Indian classical music’s biggest hits.
He has collaborated with Hariprasad Chaurasia on music for numerous Hindi films, beginning with Silsila in 1980. The Shiv-Hari music combo became well-known. Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Darr (1991) were among the films for which they wrote music (1993).

Death Cause Of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma
For the previous six months, he had been suffering from renal problems and was on dialysis. He died as a result of cardiac arrest.
His funeral will be held with full state honours at Pawan Hans tomorrow afternoon at about 3 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors will be able to pay their respects and see Sharma for the last time at his son Rahul’s house in Juhu.
