Multiple sources who were in the room when the drivers were given their own screening ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix told ESPN that the group burst into laughter at one of the crash scenes, filmed in a wet race at Monza’s Italian Grand Prix, which is supposed to be a critical moment of high drama and tension and while that moment might look over-the-top on screen, the entire sequence is borrowed from two real-life events: Formula 3 driver Alex Peroni’s airborne crash at the exact same corner in 2019, followed by the infamous fireball Romain Grosjean managed to escape from at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix.
Alexander Peroni had a shocking accident in the Formula 3 Race at Monza as a broken sausage kerb on the outside of Parabolica launched him into the air and into the catchfence but he miraculously walked away.
While Peroni managed to survive the horrific accident, the crash reignited conversations about safety and precaution.

2019 F3 Monza Crash
During the Formula 3 race at Monza, back in 2019, Peroni hit a sausage curb after running wide at the Parabolica corner. The seemingly routine contact launched his car into the air before flipping it violently and landing upside down on the catch fencing. The incident happened so quickly and left everyone viewing in shock.
Despite the severity of the crash, Alex was fortunate enough to have survived thanks to the Halo cockpit protection device introduced in 2018. While the kerb itself disintegrated on impact, it highlighted just how dangerous the layout had become for drivers. While Peroni managed to walk himself to the medical car, official reports later revealed that he suffered a broken vertebra. Peroni went on to share a photo from his hospital bed with the caption:
That was a big one. Currently recovering in hospital with a broken vertebra. Not sure the recovery time but hope to be back in the car as soon as possible. Thanks everyone for the messages and support I really appreciate it.”
F3 Monza Crash reference in new F1 Movie
Besides shaking the racing world, Peroni’s crash caught the attention of Hollywood and the upcoming Formula 1 movie makes a reference to the whole incident. The movie stars American actor Brad Pitt, and it includes a sequence that was clearly inspired by Peroni’s airborne accident.

According to reports, the film’s production team reportedly studied real crash footage of the crash and built authentic and intense race sequences. The scene seemingly serves as a tribute to both the dangers that drivers face and the importance of modern safety systems like the Halo.
