Zohran Mamdani is an Indian-American politician and a candidate for the NYC mayoral post. As part of his mayoral candidacy, he launched a campaign with a focus on economic justice, housing reform, and improving public transportation. Most of his campaign videos showcase energy and a grassroots vibe, which have captured the interest of young, progressive voters. Mamdani has proposed sweeping changes, including free child care, fare-free buses, a rent freeze for tenants in regulated apartments, and higher taxes on the wealthy.

Zohran Mamdani who is a Muslim by religion is an Indian-American politician and NYC mayoral candidate who was born in Kampala, Uganda. He moved to New York City at the age of seven with his family and grew up in a culturally rich and politically active household. Zohran’s mother, Mira Nair, is a celebrated Indian-American filmmaker, while his father, Mahmood Mamdani, works as a professor at Columbia University. Mamdani notably co-founded the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter back at his college and has since carried that same advocacy into public office.
His father Mahmood Mamdani who is an Indian-Ugandan postcolonial studies professor at Columbia University gave him the middle name Kwame after Kwame Nkrumah, the first prime minister of Ghana.
In 2018, Mamdani was naturalized as an American citizen and is a Shia Muslim, identifying with the Twelver branch.
