Dario Essugo signs for Chelsea

Portuguese talent Dario Essugo recently made headlines after completing an £18.5m deal for Chelsea. Dario Essugo joins Chelsea from Sporting CP with a contract running until 2033.

Dário Essugo is of Angolan descent, born in Odivelas, a suburb of Lisbon, Portugal and while the names of his parents are not available, he is known to have family roots in Angola.

Dario Cassia Luís Essugo is a young and upcoming professional footballer who was born on March 14, 2005, in Odivelas, Portugal. Essugo started gaining prominence in the football world at a very young age, quickly advancing through Sporting CP’s youth ranks. Essugo comes from Angolan descent, and his dedication and talents have helped him achieve several milestones even as a teenager.

Dario Essugo holds Portuguese nationality and he has previously represented Portugal at various youth levels.

Club Career

Dario Essugo started out with Sporting CP’s youth academy at just 9 years old, finally signing his professional contract on March 16, 2021. He then made history after becoming the youngest-ever debutant for Sporting’s senior team during a Primeira Liga win against Vitória de Guimarães at just 16 years and 6 days old.

The following year, in December 2021, he set another record after becoming Portugal’s youngest player to feature in a UEFA Champions League. Just a few months later, Dario became the youngest starter in Sporting’s history, surpassing Luís Figo. Dario then went on a brief loan spell with Chaves in early 2024 before joining Spanish side Las Palmas in August 2024.

Although he initially played for the reserves, he quickly broke into the first team and went on to score his first La Liga goal in November.  Most recently, Dario joined Chelsea for £18.5 million on June 2, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

International Career

Dario Essugo has played for Portugal at various youth levels on the international stage. He played in the 2022 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Israel, where he scored a thrilling goal in the quarterfinal match against France. He eventually earned his first cap for the Portuguese under-21 side at the age of just 18.
