Before carrying out the precision strikes on the nine cross-border terror camps on May 7 as part of Operation Sindoor, the Indian military conducted “careful scrutiny” of their layouts, configurations, and surrounding terrain, according to Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai on Sunday.

The top Army general Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai told reporters, “I have no doubt in my mind that we achieved total surprise and those strikes across those nine terror hubs left more than 100 terrorists killed, including high-value targets.”

In October 2024, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai assumed the crucial role of Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) in the Indian Army. With noteworthy operational, command, and staff assignments especially in delicate areas like Jammu and Kashmir, he has served in the military for more than thirty years.

Prior to this, he also served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) at Srinagar-based Chinar corps and in India, the DGMO is a high-ranking army officer in charge of military planning and border operations. While his DOB isn’t known, he is aged between 50-60 years. Details about his family members aren’t known.

According to the 7th Pay Commission, the basic salary for a Lieutenant General in the Indian Army ranges from ₹1,82,200 to ₹2,24,100 per month and not only this, DGMO also gets many other types of allowances. Overall, their salary ranges from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh per month and apart from this, house, medical facilities etc. are also provided.

Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai was commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment in December 1989 after graduating from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. He has held some of the most prestigious positions during his 33-year career, including Brigadier at Army Headquarters’ Military Operations Directorate and Colonel General Staff in a division assigned to counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

His extensive operational experience is demonstrated by his leadership of a division on the Northern Borders, a brigade, and a battalion on the Western Sector.

Lt Gen Ghai served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC) of the Chinar Corps, the Indian Army organization responsible for operations in Kashmir, before being appointed DGMO. In order to combat terrorism and promote development, he emphasized in his inauguration address the importance of perseverance and hard work in pursuing peace and stability in the area. He also called for tight coordination between the military, the civil government, and society at large.

In his capacity as DGMO, Lt Gen Ghai is also in charge of organizing and leading military activities, including counterterrorism and combat missions. He works closely with other government ministries and services to keep the military prepared for any mission. In order to handle and reduce tensions at the border, he has direct lines of communication with Pakistan’s DGMO and serves as the primary military mediator.
