Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood, a Pakistani nuclear scientist from a Bhullar Zamindar dynasty, was Chaudhry’s father. Mahmood is one of the people who the Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee named and sanctioned in December 2001. Additionally, the United States has designated him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

The UNSC’s al-Qaida Sanctions Committee page lists Lt Gen Chaudhry’s father as Mahmood Sultan Bashir-Ud-Din who was listed by the UNSC’s sanctions committee as a terrorist on December 24, 2001, for his association with al-Qaida, its chief Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.

Mahmood had freaked out his colleagues in Pakistan earlier as his “religious intensity, combined with his sympathy for Islamic extremism, scared his colleagues,” according to a 2009 report in The New York Times Magazine, forcing him to retire early.

His brother Asim Mehmood is a doctor.

In response to questions about the possibility of dialogue with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) at a press conference on May 8, 2024, Chaudhry said, “If some political mindset, leader, or clique attacks its own army, causes rifts between the army and its people, insults the nation’s martyrs and issues threats and hatches propaganda, then there can be no dialogue with them.”

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry was the Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) during a renewed escalation of hostilities between India and Pakistan in May 2025. General Sharif vehemently denounced the acts as unwarranted aggression in the wake of Indian airstrikes under “Operation Sindoor” that targeted purported insurgent infrastructure in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

During a number of press conferences, he gave Pakistan’s official account, highlighting the destruction of holy sites and the deaths of civilians. Prior to Pakistan’s retaliation operation “Bunyan al-Marsoos” on May 10, 2025, which targeted important installations in Indian territory, General Sharif declared that Pakistan would react whenever and wherever it saw fit.
