Age 45 Shanoo Sharma is a famous Indian casting director who was born in Mumbai, India with her having 18 years of experience in the industry now. Shanoo had a very unique childhood while growing up, as she spent her time across various parts of the country and attending seven different schools. Shanoo even spent a part of her early life in Johannesburg after moving there with her family.
She was the daughter of a father who worked as a hotelier and a mother who worked as a dentist with her also being close to Raj Kapoor’s family. Meanwhile, she had a brother, named Sameer Sharma, who played a major role in introducing her to the film industry. Shanoo is renowned for having a warm personality and has served as a mentor to many young actors.
Born in Mumbai, Sharma grew up all over the country, changing seven schools before moving with her parents to Johannesburg where her father had set up an Indian restaurant and her hotelier father counted several film directors and producers as close friends, while her elder brother, Sameer who is seven years elder to her, is a writer and director (Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana). When Sameer was working on Sudhir Mishra’s 2007 film Khoya Khoya Chand, he asked sister Shanoo to cast for the film.
Shanoo went on to help with the casting in Aaja Nachle, Buddha Mar Gaya (Anupam Kher, Om Puri and Paresh Rawal), an American film called The Other End Of The Line (Anupam Kher), the unreleased Tere Kya Hoga Johny (where she cast her cousin Neil Nitin Mukesh) and Rock On!! (Purab Kohli and Shahana Goswami).
She has also cast for movies like Kurbaan, My Name Is Khan, Sikandar, Tere Bin Laden, We Are Family, I Hate Love Storys, Yeh Saali Zindagi, Band Baajaa Baarat and Ra.One and then joined Yash Raj Films, and her first casting assignment was for the 2011 film Luv Ka The End.
Shanoo’s maternal grandfather was the legendary singer Mukesh while her paternal grandfather was a film distributor, who worked with B R Chopra for 55 years.
Shanoo spent the first six years of her life in Jaipur, and then four years in Lucknow and when she was about 10, the family shifted to South Africa and opened a restaurant. They ran it for nine years before coming to Mumbai.
Shanoo ran her father’s restaurant for a while, finished her schooling, and decided she has had enough of the academic life and at 17, she returned to Mumbai, and took up odd jobs that ranged from assisting designer Manish Malhotra to bartending, working in a PR agency, managing events, styling and acting.
