Prayagraj’s annual Maha Kumbh mela has highlighted ‘IIT Baba’ Abhay Singh, a unique spiritual character with his Instagram handle now viral
During the major religious ceremony, Abhay Singh, a former aerospace engineer, grabbed headlines. His father, Karan Grewal, a Jhajjar, Haryana-based lawyer, now wants him to go back to his hometown. He told media, “Our family wants Abhay to go back home. But it’s difficult for him to return after accomplishing so much.”

The father of Abhay Singh claims that his son has always excelled academically. Following his studies at IIT Bombay, Abhay Singh worked in Canada and New Delhi while pursuing a Master’s in Design. After a while, he left Canada and went back to India, where he spent the winters at holy locations like Dharamshala, Mussoorie, and Shimla and revealed that he was mocked by his family for taking up photography.

“After that, he decided to become a sanyasi,” his father told media. “He was always interested in spirituality.”
Asked if he was in contact with his son, Mr Grewal shared, “I was in contact with him until six months ago. After that, he blocked me and all communication with me.”
He further shared, “I heard he was in Haridwar and wanted to visit him but couldn’t, and now he has gone viral in the media.”
Baba Abhay aka Abhey Singh of IIT had described how his spiritual path was impacted by “domestic violence” during his early years. He claimed that although he wasn’t personally affected, his parents’ incessant arguments “traumatized” him. Mr. Singh claimed that as a child, he would study late into the night to avoid the commotion at home. When questioned why he didn’t get married, he acknowledged that he chose a quiet, alone existence after seeing his parents’ fight despite having dated a girl for four years who is now married. Abhay who is from Haryana has a sister who is settled in Canada.
As he has gone viral after being spotted at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, Instagram highlight posts of Abhay have also gone viral which voice some extremely extremist views with him going onto persistently slander Muslims, labelling Islam as a religion which uses dark tantra, calling it a bhakti movement of the demon along claiming Christianity had done harm to righteousness.
