Jeenesh Nahar, a 25-year-old Bangalore tourist, went missing on December 25 after he fell through a thin layer of ice close to Sangam Point in Leh-Ladakh.
Around three o’clock in the afternoon, Jeenesh Nahar was sitting on the ice when it suddenly gave way beneath him, sending him into the icy water below.

A 25-year-old Bangalore architect named Jeenesh Nahar has gone missing in Leh, Ladakh after the incident at Sangam Point. He was last spotted wearing a white jacket and his height stood at 5’7″.
Jeenesh went on a solo trip and was last spotted near Sangam Lake Point around 3 PM on December 25, 2024 at 3pm and has now been over 24 hours since the incident. The Army and local police, UTDRF, locals and Chuchot Volunteers are conducting a rescue operation to locate him.
The Srinagar-Leh Highway was closed on Friday due to fresh snowfall, and Kashmir has been experiencing severe cold wave-like conditions with minimum temperatures still hovering several degrees below freezing.
In an effort to aid the authorities in their hunt for Jeenesh Nahar, his family and friends have made a social media appeal, asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to share it. The tragedy has raised questions about both citizens’ and visitors’ safety during the severe winter months. ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the coldest winter season, has gripped Kashmir since December 21.
Investigation
For the past three days, the Indian Army, local police, and Chuchot volunteers have been involved in search and rescue efforts. But as of yet, the missing tourist has not been found.
The risks of walking or sitting on fragile ice formations have been highlighted by authorities, who have advised visitors to the area to use caution when near frozen water bodies. Rescue crews are still battling the bitter cold in an effort to find Jeenesh Nahar.
Deaths in Himachal Pradesh
Heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh has unfortunately led to the deaths of at least four people in the last 48 hours as tourists swarm to the well-known hill stations of Shimla and Manali for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
At least 223 roads in the state, including three national highways, have been closed as a result of the unfavorable weather.
Significant snowfall is falling in the districts of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba, and Sirmaur, as well as in the regions of Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti. Tourist interest is still high despite the hazardous road conditions; hotel occupancy in Shimla is said to be 70%, which is 30% more than it was at the same time last year.
