A young toddler named Sarkar recently achieved the title of a FIDE-rated chess player at the young age of 3 years, 8 months, and 19 days.

Anish Sarkar, became the youngest-ever FIDE-rated player, after an impressive Elo rating of 1555.

Anish Sarkar bio

Anish Sarkar is a young chess player who was born on January 26, 2021, in Kaikhali, north Kolkata. He is currently just 3 years old. Sarkar was born into a lower-middle-class family, where the parents had no prior knowledge of chess. In fact, Sarkar began his journey just one year back when he was just a toddler.

Back in an interview, Anish Sarkar’s mother shared how they introduced him to different YouTube channels, including cartoons like Peppa Pig. However, the young toddler was only drawn towards chess videos. He eventually grew an interest for the game and would watch videos of chess matches endlessly.  The parents eventually bought him a chessboard and pieces, and Anish quickly developed a liking for the game. Since then, the parents placed him under the guidance of Dibyendu Sir, his current coach. He is currently training at the Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy.

Anish Sarkar chess journey

Sarkar started out his chess journey with a debut against India’s top-ranked Grandmaster, Arjun Erigaisi. He competed against Arjun even before reaching three and a half years of age. Following the achievement, he achieved his first Elo rating of 1555, on November 1, 2024. The toddler participated in the West Bengal State Under-9 Open as well as the West Bengal State Under-13 Open tournaments.

During the under-9 tournament. Anish Sarkar scored 5.5 points out of a possible eight, and finished in 24th place out of a total of 140 participants. The youngster also made his classical tournament debut during the same event. Anish managed to defeat two rated players in the final two rounds, namely Arav Chatterjee (1551), and Ahilaan Baishya (1442).

Despite losing against both the players, Sarkar managed to earned an FIDE (International Chess Federation) rating. Following the achievement, he is now past his fellow compatriots like Tejas Tiwari. Notably, Tiwari previously held the youngest FIDE-rated player in 2023 at the age of five.
