A worldwide humanitarian off the court and one of the most intimidating shot blocks in NBA history on the court, Dikembe Mutombo also known as Mount Mutombo passed away on Monday at the age of 58 from brain cancer, the NBA announced. In 2022, he started receiving therapy for a brain tumour.
Age 58 Dikembe Mutombo was born on June 25, 1966 in Republic of the Congo to Biamba Marie Mutombo and Samuel. He was 7ft 2in tall. His father held positions in Congo’s department of education after retiring as a school principal. Dikembe spoke English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and five Central African languages including Lingala and Tshiluba. He belonged to the Luba ethnic group.
For high school, Dikembe Mutombo went to Boboto College in Kinshas. He practiced martial arts and played football. Because of his height, Mutombo made the decision at the age of sixteen to focus only on his basketball career, with the support of his father and brother.
Mutombo received a USAID scholarship to attend Georgetown University. His original goal was to become a doctor, but John Thompson, the basketball coach for the Georgetown Hoyas, convinced him to try out for the team.
Mutombo visited Kinshasa in 1995 and there he met Rose, his future wife. They had three kids and were Atlanta residents. In addition, they took in four of Rose’s brothers’ adopted kids. Ryan Mutombo, the son of Dikembe and Rose, was rated as the 16th-best high school centre in the country.
He made a commitment to play basketball for Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 2021.

The Denver Nuggets selected Dikembe Mutombo with the fourth overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft. The Nuggets had the lowest opponent points-per-game and defensive rating in the NBA, and Mutombo’s ability to block shots had an instant impact on players throughout the league.
Following the NBA season of 1995โ96, Mutombo inked a $55 million, five-year contract as a free agency with the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks sent Mutombo and Roshown McLeod to the Philadelphia 76ers, who were leading the Eastern Conference, at the February 2001 trade deadline.
The Bulls sent Mike Wilks, Adrian Griffin, and Eric Piatkowski to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Mutombo prior to the 2004โ05 season. One of the most effective centre combinations in the NBA was made up of Yao Ming and Mutombo.
Nicknamed “Mount Mutombo” for his defensive prowess, he is commonly regarded as one of the greatest shot-blockers and defensive players of all time but didn’t win any NBA championships.
His career averages of 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game underscored his dominance and over his career, Mutombo earned over $143 million in salary alone, along with millions more from endorsements with his net worth standing at $75 million at the time of his death.
