A Discord account linked to possible violence at a school featured threats last year, prompting local officials to interview the father and son. But there was no hard proof connecting them to the dangers. Although the father-maintained hunting rifles in the house, he denied his son unsupervised access to them.
“This case was worked, and at the time the boy was 13, and it wasn’t enough to substantiate,” explained Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum. “If we get a judge’s order or we charge somebody, we take firearms for safekeeping.”
Colt Gray was taken into custody shortly after the police broke into the school. He is charged with firing shots from an AR-15 weapon that the police claim was used to kill math professors Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, as well as 14-year-olds Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn.

Law enforcement officials claim that 54-year-old Colin Gray bought the AR-style gun used in the December shooting as a Christmas present for his son. Colt Gray was also investigated as a suspect last year, police reported shortly after the Apalachee High shooting, after he posted threatening statements on social media that targeted a Jackson County school.
The gun used in the Barrow shooting, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, was delivered to Colt Gray’s father a few months after the Grays were questioned by Jackson sheriff’s investigators in 2023. At the time, investigators decided there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges, therefore they decided not to.
His wife Marcee, 43, has a lengthy rap sheet with drug and domestic violence arrests and the two had three children together. Colin and his family were all white Americans.
Gray’s maternal grandfather told CNN, “His dad beat up on him, I mean, I’m not talking about physical, but screaming and hollering, and he did the same thing to my daughter,”
Marcee, who attended Georgia Southern University and listed her profession on LinkedIn as a “quality engineer” at a local manufacturer, has a lengthy criminal history spanning 17 years and four Georgia counties. Colin meanwhile works in construction.
