Bodycam video of police officer shooting Sonya Massey goes viral
According to official reports from the authorities, Massey had earlier called 911 to report a suspected prowler near her residence. According to the bodycam video, the two deputies responded to the call just before 1 a.m. on July 6. After walking around the house and spotting a black SUV with broken windows in the driveway, they eventually walked up to Massey’s house and knocked on the door.
After about three minutes, Massey opened the door and immediately responded, “Don’t hurt me.” She eventually let the two in and showed her identification to complete a report. Grayson then pointed out a pot sitting on a flame on the stove, to which Massey immediately got up and went to the stove.

Massey then moved the pot near a sink before sharing a laugh with Grayson. The video then shows her stating “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” prompting Grayson to react with the words:
“You better (expletive) not or I swear to God I’ll (expletive) shoot you in your (expletive) face.”
Things immediately got tense as Grayson pulled out his 9mm pistol and demanded she drop the pot. The footage showed him pointing his weapon at her as she ducked and raised her hands. Despite a counter dividing the living room and kitchen and enough distance between the two, Grayson felt threatened and shot her, before discouraging his partner from grabbing a medical kit to save her.
Following the incident, Grayson told the responding police:
She had boiling water and came at me, with boiling water. She said she was going to rebuke me in the name of Jesus and came at me with boiling water.”
Sonya Massey’s family speaks out

Crump called Grayson’s “revisionist” justification “disingenuous” in his speech. Crump also spoke during Massey’s funeral on Friday, stating that the video would “shock the conscience of America.”
Meanwhile, Massey’s father, James Wilburn also spoke, saying:
The only time I will see my baby again is when I leave this world,” Wilburn said. “And I don’t ever want anybody else in the United States to join this league.”
