Club Release Statement
In their statement, the Championship club asked for the privacy for Matija Sarkicโs family. โMillwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26,โ the Championship club stated.
Aston Villa also took to their official X handle and expressed condolences to Sarkic’s family.

About Matija Sarkic
For the unversed, Matija Sarkic, born on July 23 1997, was a professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Standing at 6 ft 4 in (1.94 m), Sarkic, born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, began his career in Anderlechtโs academy before joining Aston Villa in 2015.
Bojan Sarkic, Sarkicโs father, is a Montenegrin diplomat, who currently serves as the Ambassador to the European Union. Bojan Saekic previously worked as a Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Belgium.
His mother, Natalie Sarkic-Todd, is British and works at a European media network. Matija had a twin brother, Oliver, with whom he played during his time at Anderlecht.
Career
Sarkic had loan spells at Wigan, Stratford, Havant and Waterlooville, and Livingston before transferring to Wolves in 2020.
During subsequent loan periods at Shrewsbury, Birmingham, and Stoke, he played 60 games before joining Millwall last August, where he made 33 appearances.
He debuted for Montenegro against Belarus in 2019 and was on international duty last week for a friendly match against Belgium.
