Tariq Helou was a popular Singaporean chef who was recently dubbed as Asia’s Most Googled chef. Helou was the proud owner of Fleurette, an 18-seat restaurant located on Rangoon Road, in the Serangoon area of Singapore. He was just 29 years old at the time of his passing. Chef Helou shared how he started cooking at the young age of three in an interview in 2020 and said that he grew up watching his mother cook and would often spend time at his Japanese grandmother’s home in Singapore.
Despite his Singaporean citizenship, Helou was of Japanese, Chinese, and Lebanese descent. Aside from his interest in cooking, Tariq was also an avid Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner and even had an imposing build.
Tariq Helou chef career
Tariq owned a restaurant named Fleurette, which he established in 2020 with support from friends and family. Before launching Fleurette, Helou pursued culinary studies in Switzerland and France. He received special training in Michelin-starred establishments, like Domaine de Chateauvieux in Geneva and Restaurant Louis in Paris, where he also worked as a chef. Moreover, he also completed various internships at renowned Michelin-starred restaurants like Sumibikappo Shirosaka and Restaurant Anis in Tokyo, Japan.
Family
Following his death, Tariq Helou leaves behind his parents, a younger brother and two sisters. Helou’s mother, Catherine Yong, shared that Fleurette will remain operational and stated:
I spoke to the staff, and they have agreed to continue for now.”
