Matthew Curtis Painter is an American basketball coach and former player who was born on August 27, 1970 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S. He has been the 19th head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers since 2005. The 53 year old has a height of 6 feet 7 inches.

Matt Painter is the second-most-honored Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year ever, after his predecessor Gene Keady with five wins.

Boilers finished the regular season with a 34-5 record, captured the Big Ten regular season championship for the second time in a row, and advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 1980.

From 1989 to 1993, he was a Purdue University basketball player. From 2003 to 2004, he served as the Southern Illinois Salukis’ head coach as well.

Following his high school graduation in 1989, Painter attended Purdue University, where he played point guard for the Boilermakers, making one season of starts. He was named honourable mention All-Big Ten Conference as a senior in 1993 and led Purdue in assists.

Painter worked as an assistant coach in 1993–1994 at Washington & Jefferson, in 1993–1994 at Barton, in 1995–1998 at Eastern Illinois, and in 1998–2003 at Southern Illinois.

He was elevated to head coach after Bruce Weber moved for Illinois in 2002 and 2003, having assisted Southern Illinois in winning back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference titles in both years. Soon after, Painter agreed to a six-year contract to lead the Purdue Boilermakers.

During his time at Purdue University, Painter coached nine players who went on to play in the NBA, three of them were selected in the first round of the selection Draft.
